How To Make Olive Oil

The benefits of olive oil are countless, it is not only good for health but it will also make your hair healthy. Well producing large batches of olive oil for commercial purpose will require costly machinery and complex work.

But you can make olive oil at home naturally. Well, “the craft of turning olives into olive oil has been honed in the Mediterranean region over the thousands of years these techniques have been passed down from generation to generation”.

To make olive oil you will need 5lbs/ 2.2 kg fresh organic olives and 125 to 150 ml hot water.

Choosing Olive Oil

Choosing Olive Oil

You can choose ripe black olives or unripe green olive oil according to your choice. But make sure that you use freshly harvested olives instead of the processed canned type olive.

The oil that is made with black olive oil will offer more health benefits of olive oil as compared with unripe olive. But the smoking point and taste do not differ too much.

The unripe olive oil will produce a green-tinted oil while the rip olives produce the gold-tinted olive oil.

Wash Them Thoroughly To Make Olive Oil

Place all the olive in a colander and gently rinse them under the running and cool water. Scrub away the dirt with the help of fingers for getting the benefits of olive oil.

During washing them also sort the olive oil and pick out any twigs, leaves, stones, or other debris that mix with the olive fruits. After rinsing the olive, allow the excess water to drain and pat your olives dry by using clean paper towels.

Well, the olives do not need to be perfectly dry since any water will separate from the oil. But make sure that olive oil should at least be mostly dry if you are processing the action right away.

Make Olive Oil With In A Days

Grind the olives into oil on the same day that you obtain them or you can probably wait up to two or more than three days for getting the benefits of olive oil.

Because waiting for a longer period of olive oil will decrease the flavor and also the quality of the oil that you will produce.

Grinding And Pressing To Make Olive Oil

Grinding And Pressing To Make Olive Oil

Even though you are making a relatively small batch of olive oil only 500 ml of olive.

So, you may need to separate the full batch into three or four parts while working and it also depends on the size of the equipment.

Gather The Olive In A Shallow Bowl

Now place the clean olives in a bowl with shallow sides. Know you should be able to keep the olives in a single layer.

For getting the benefits of olive oil it’s best to use a bowl or similar dish with the sides rather than something completely flat.

While grinding the first time can not produce that much liquid so using a bowl will help you to collect that any liquid that comes out more readily than a flat board.

To Make Olive Oil Crush Them Into Paste

To make Olive Oil Crush Them Into Paste

Repeatedly strike the olives and mash them into a thick, chunky paste with the help of a clean mallet. For this step, the stander mallet tenderizer is the best.

The plastic or metal mallet is advised to use because the wooden mallets can absorb some of the liquid from the olives. Remove some of the pits while crushing them.

Since the pits are relatively fragile, you might easily crush them into the olive paste. Doing so won’t have a negative impact.

When the olive is thoroughly crushed and mash then they should have a slightly shiny coating over their surfaces.

The crushing olive can break apart the flesh of the olives, thereby it will release the oil contained within its cells. The benefits of olive oil are numerous so try to add olive oil to your daily life.

Transfer The Paste Into The Tall Glass

Now transfer the paste into a tall glass because the next process is really messy. Well using the tall glass or dish can help you to reduce some of the inevitable splatters.

If you want then you can also pour the paste into a durable high-speed blender. But make sure that filling is not more than one-third of the tall glass at a time.

Combine The Paste With Water

Combine The Paste With Water

Pour about 2 to 3 tablespoon of hot water into the glass of every 1 cup of mashed olive to get the benefits of olive oil. Stir the contents of the dish to distribute the water evenly and let it sink to the bottom of the glass.

Because you will need enough water that helps to facilitate the upcoming blending process but not add enough water completely over the olives. Make sure that water is hot and not boiling.

Because the extra heat can release more oil from the paste and also uses filtered or distilled water. The unfiltered water may add impurities to the final product.

Blend The Mixture To Make Olive Oil

Gently grind the olive paste further with the help of an immersion blender, blend them until the beads of oil begin rising to the surface of the paste.

Continue this process for at least 5 minutes to get more benefits of olive oil. Blending the olive paste for longer intervals should help to release more oil from the olives. But it will also increase the amount of oxidation.

Extract The Oil

Extract The Oil

With the help of a mixing spoon gently mix the mashed olive for several minutes continuing until the small beads of oil will turn into the larger beads.

Stir the olive mixture into the circular rotations. Because the force of each rotation can help you to draw more oil out from the pulp.

For getting all the benefits of olive oil instead of using the high speed to separate the oil you will rely on the direction of the force to separate out the various types of components.

Now cover the olive paste with a clean cloth, lid, or paper towel. And allow the mixture to rest for 5 to 10 minutes without any disturbance.

Now cut the drape cheesecloth piece twice as large as the mouth of the stainer and gently center the cloth over the top of the strainer. The rest of the cloth covers the strainer over the large bowl.

Well if you don’t have cheesecloth then you can use the large sheets of the filter paper of clean painter’s straining bags that have never been used before.

Pour The Mixture Into The Cheesecloth

Transfer the all olive paste with the all visible liquid and solid directly to the center of the cheesecloth.

After pouring the mixture on the cheesecloth gently wrap up the side of the cloth over the olive mixture by creating a secure bundle. Then place a wooden block or similar weight on the top of the bundled olive paste.

Make sure that the weight should havier that can actively press down on the bundle.

Let The Liquid Drain

Let the olive juice, water, and olive oil drain through the cheesecloth and also strainer for 30 minutes. The bowl that is placed under the strainer can collect the liquid as it drains.

Every 5 to 10 minutes, gently press them down the bundle with your hands for speeding up the extraction process.  When you are ready to move on to the other step the bowl will contain a decent puddle of liquid.

The olive solids will collect inside the cheesecloth and it looks relatively dry. Discard the olive solids at the end of the draining process.

Transfer The Liquid Another Dish

Transfer The Liquid Another Dish

Once the all liquid is drained through the cheesecloth and strain into the bowl, then transfer the liquid into a separate glass or tall transparent container.

Due to the gravity and some other different densities of olive oil, water and juice liquid will naturally separate off into different layers. The olive oil layer can rise on the top of the glass.

Also, keep the olive oil to rest for a couple of hours to separate them from each other. Then place the tip of a baster or the syringe on the beneath of the surface of the upper liquid.

And carefully draw out the top layer liquid by leaving the lower layers of the olive. Gently transfer the upper portion of the liquid into a separate glass.

Then pour the clean olive oil into the clean glass bottle and seal the top of the bottle. Now your homemade olive oil is ready to use. Add this olive oil to your dish or hair and get all the benefits of olive oil.
